Basic Pet Grooming: A Guide to Get Started
As people's living standards improve, owning pets has become a new trend. But how should we care for our pets in daily life? Simply using some pet products without proper knowledge isn’t the way to go. Many pet owners find this question challenging. So, let’s learn the basics of pet grooming together!
Brushing (Tool: Pin Brush)
Start by using a pin brush or other professional pet grooming tools to brush your dog's fur. This helps remove dead hair and tangles, making the coat smooth, clean, and shiny.
Combing (Tool: Comb)
After brushing, use a comb to further detangle and check for any remaining knots. If you don’t detangle the knots before bathing, they will be even harder to remove afterward, and the bath won’t clean your dog's coat thoroughly. For severe tangles, you can use a mat splitter.
Bathing
When bathing your dog, choose a shampoo that is suitable for their coat type. The water temperature should be between 35-45°C, with slightly warmer water in winter. Typically, long-haired dogs should be bathed once a week, while short-haired dogs can be bathed every two weeks. Using a bathing brush can help clean the surface of the skin better and reduce the risk of skin diseases.
Drying
After bathing, use an absorbent towel to dry off excess water from your dog’s coat, then use a blow dryer to dry their fur completely. You can comb the fur while blow-drying to achieve a naturally fluffy and beautiful coat.
Nail Trimming
Overgrown nails can affect your dog's walking and cause bone deformities or unappealing posture. In some cases, long nails can even penetrate the pads, causing pain. Trimming nails may seem simple, but be careful not to cut too deeply to avoid bleeding.
Cleaning Eyes and Ears
Dogs communicate through their eyes, and if they are uncomfortable, they may scratch their eyes, which can harm the cornea. Dogs’ ears are also prone to infections, especially in breeds with long ears. Signs of ear issues include frequent scratching, head shaking, and unpleasant discharge. Regular cleaning of eyes and ears at a pet grooming salon can prevent various diseases.
Trimming Fur
Healthy dogs naturally like to stay clean. If their fur becomes messy, they may lick it clean themselves. However, regular brushing and occasional grooming at a pet salon are necessary. For example, overlong fur around the rear can interfere with bowel movements, and fur on the belly and legs can affect walking or get dirty easily. Overlong fur on the paws can cause slipping. Therefore, regular trimming is essential for all long-haired dogs.
These are the fundamental steps in pet grooming. Beginners should use professional pet products under the guidance of a veterinarian and become familiar with these practices before grooming their pets at home!
