How to Choose the Right Leash for Walking Your Dog
For families with dogs, daily walks are essential, especially for larger breeds, as they can otherwise cause damage to the home! In line with national guidelines, using a leash while walking your dog is necessary.
How can you choose the right leash that fits your dog’s size and provides a comfortable grip for you?
The market offers a wide variety of pet leashes, so what are the key points to consider when choosing one for dogs of different sizes? We, at Shengkang, have been in the pet leash manufacturing business for over 20 years, and here, we share our experience based on product knowledge.
The Zhejiang Pet Product Industry Association has issued the T/ZPPIA 001—2018 "Pet Dog Leash (Lead)" group standard. This standard follows principles of openness, fairness, transparency, consensus, and promotes trade and communication. It was formulated according to the "Standard Formulation Procedure Document_ZPPIA" published on this platform. The content of T/ZPPIA 001—2018 complies with national laws, regulations, and mandatory standards, without infringing on others' legal rights. The association has released technical requirements for the tensile strength of leashes, which can be used as a reference:
Tensile Strength (in Newtons)
Miniature dogs: ≥220
Small dogs: ≥450
Medium dogs: ≥900
Large dogs: ≥1300
1. Collar + Short Lead
For easily controlled dogs, using a collar and short lead is a good option. The collar should be comfortable and not too tight, ideally leaving enough space for two fingers. Prolonged wear of a collar can affect the fur on your dog’s neck, so be sure to remove it when not needed.
2. Harness Leash
There is a belief that using a harness leash can be beneficial for a dog's cervical spine. A harness distributes the pulling force across the dog's body, reducing the strain on the neck. Therefore, this type of leash is recommended for larger dogs.
3. Retractable Leash
Retractable leashes come in small, medium, and large sizes. Their ergonomic handles make them comfortable to hold. However, due to the internal mechanism and longer leash length, they tend to be heavier than regular leashes. The greatest advantage of retractable leashes is their ability to withstand pulling and provide adjustable length. This feature is especially useful in outdoor settings, where it expands the dog’s range of movement while effectively preventing sudden bursts of speed.
When choosing a retractable leash, consider the desired retractable length and select the appropriate size based on your dog’s breed.
In addition to the above points, make sure to check for quality labels from manufacturers when purchasing a leash to ensure that the product meets the necessary standards.
