Increasing Competition in the Pet Supplies Industry
Owning pets inevitably means spending more money. According to incomplete statistics, there are currently no fewer than 100,000 pet dogs in Wuhan, and the pet-related market continues to expand, with more and more pet hospitals and lifestyle centers opening up.
Pet Supplies: Declining Profits
Store owners are reporting that in recent years, as the number of pet supplies stores has increased, competition has become fiercer. Many small stores are now finding it harder to make a profit. "The profit on every 500 grams of bulk dog food is only 1 yuan. After deducting rent, there is hardly any profit," said Mr. Yang, the owner of a pet supplies store on Heping Avenue. The barrier to entry in the pet supplies market is relatively low—anyone with a storefront and sourcing capabilities can enter. Recently, many new stores have opened, and business is not as good as it was a few years ago.
"There's a pet supplies store almost every few steps, so people naturally choose the cheaper options," said Liu Wenwen, a resident of Donghu New Village. Common pet supplies like dog food, clothing, and small toys can all be checked online for prices.
"Currently, many pet supplies have a profit margin of only 20%. If you don't have a large customer base, it's basically impossible to make money," said a shop owner at the Baguo Flower and Bird Market. Although some pet clothing and toys may appear to be priced high, their production costs are also relatively high due to lack of mass production. Moreover, many customers prefer to stick with their usual stores, which makes it very challenging for newly opened stores to stay profitable. Li Yang, owner of the Pet Love Lifestyle Center, suggested that in a saturated pet dog market, exploring other types of pets might be a new approach.
Pet Hospitals: Good Service Overcomes Location Challenges
"Doctor, do you think my dog has a cold?" "My dog isn't eating; do you think it needs some medication?" When a reporter passed by Huaxing Pet Hospital, several doctors were extremely busy. One doctor mentioned that during the New Year's holiday, many customers bring their pets in for treatment, and consumers are willing to spend generously on their beloved pets. As a result, pet hospitals are currently doing well.
"Medical skills and trust are key to the long-term success of a pet hospital. Our hospital has diagnosed over 2,000 pet cases, with an annual revenue of about 300,000 yuan," said Chen Jianguo, a pet doctor with 20 years of experience. He noted that the hospital originally operated in Hankou but moved to Wuchang in 2005, and they still have old clients from Hankou seeking their services. Unlike pet supplies stores, pet hospitals do not face random customer searches, so even if located in a less accessible area, they can still operate successfully.
However, the barrier to entry for pet hospitals is relatively high. Industry access is difficult, requiring a veterinary qualification, and initial investment is also substantial, including the cost of specialized pet medical equipment such as blood tests, X-rays, and ultrasounds. Setting up a legitimate pet hospital typically requires an initial investment of around 100,000 yuan. Chen Jianguo pointed out that many pet supplies stores on the streets of Wuhan are also dabbling in pet medical services. If regulatory scrutiny increases, these stores might face closures.
