The Rapidly Growing Pet Economy Amidst the Singles Trend

In recent years, the number of singles, often humorously referred to as "single dogs," has been on the rise. With the national marriage rate declining to 7.2%, the pet economy is booming, solidifying the status of these "single dogs." Many singles tend to adopt one or several pets, investing in various pet supplies and services, which in turn fuels the continuous growth of the pet economy. Manufacturers of pet products have seized this new opportunity. As life becomes increasingly fast-paced, many young people born in the '90s and '95s are entering a competitive job market. Late nights at work and the pressures of daily life can leave them feeling overwhelmed by social relationships. Yet, amidst this struggle, they seek simple and genuine emotional connections, making pets an appealing option. Unlike the complexities of human relationships, the affection from cats and dogs is straightforward and direct, fulfilling the emotional needs of modern youth. Notably, for many students from the 2000s who choose to stay up late as a form of rebellion, a pet can help alleviate mental stress to some extent. Thus, rather than focusing solely on their own enjoyment, pet owners are more than willing to contribute to the pet economy.

"I think it's adorable to groom my cat Yuzu and dress her up when I have some free time," says Yuzu's owner, who has captured countless photos of her beloved feline. Many pet owners share this sentiment, dedicating considerable effort to select suitable treats, toys, leashes, and other pet supplies for their furry friends. Additionally, services such as pet healthcare and grooming are emerging as new industries. On average, owning a pet costs around 7,000 to 8,000 yuan annually. For high-income millennials, the expenses related to pet ownership are becoming more detailed, naturally leading to higher prices. Whereas pets were once merely companions during leisure time, they are now seen as integral family members. "Last time my dog had a serious illness, I spent tens of thousands on treatment, but ultimately, it was worth it," says Ms. Li while gently stroking her golden retriever, Da Tian. Who says that single professionals are lonely? Pets provide constant companionship. These singles are gradually influencing the development of the pet economy through their behavior and impact. Numerous pet product manufacturers are taking advantage of this opportunity, aligning the concept of pet ownership with the fashion trends and lifestyles of young people.

They emphasize freedom and responsibility in their products. While a single individual may not change much, the collective influence of many singles can significantly impact industry trends. The rise of singlehood is not only boosting the pet economy but also contributing to diverse ideologies. Of course, pet owners need to work hard to ensure that pet ownership remains a comfortable experience!
