How much do dogs crave delicious food? One moment they're waiting for their owner to take them outside on a leash, and the next, they’re quickly moving towards their food bowl. Perhaps you’ve just returned from a walk with your dog and want to groom them, but they can hardly wait to enjoy a tasty treat. Because of this, owners often need to use a leash to exercise their dogs and prevent obesity. Many pet owners are aware of foods that dogs should avoid, but do you know which foods are actually good for them?
The Deliciousness of Yogurt
During the hot summer months, owners often freeze plain yogurt into popsicles to help cool their dogs down, especially after walks. Plain, unsweetened yogurt is a favorite treat for dogs; whether added to their water or frozen into popsicles, it’s delightful. Compared to regular milk, yogurt is less likely to cause digestive issues, making it a great reward during leash training in summer.
Some Fruits and Vegetables are Excellent
When it comes to fruits and vegetables, some dogs will eagerly want to indulge even when on a leash. Bananas and apples are rich in fiber and oligosaccharides, which help promote beneficial bacteria in the gut and alleviate constipation. Raw carrots, cut into small pieces, can serve as a snack during leash training and help clean teeth, prevent cancer, and stimulate appetite.
Broccoli is packed with beta-carotene, vitamins B1, B2, C, and iron, while pumpkin can help dogs feel full and is beneficial for improving constipation. However, when walking with a dog on a leash, it’s important to monitor them if they show interest in certain fruits or vegetables from outside. For example, the vitamin C and potassium in potatoes can cause allergies, so they must be cooked before feeding. Dogs with arthritis, parasitic infections, or respiratory issues should never consume them. So, while some fruits and vegetables are good for dogs, owners still need to keep a close watch on what their pets are eating.
A Balanced Diet with Meat and Vegetables
While walking dogs on a leash is essential, combining fruits and vegetables with meat is also important. Liver and lean meat are well-known favorites among dogs. Lean meat has low fat content and provides protein that supports skin and coat health. Liver is rich in protein and various nutrients like vitamins A, B1, B2, B12, C, iron, and copper; it can be cooked and served as a meal, but moderation is key. Fresh salmon is also a great source of fatty acids, which are beneficial for a dog's coat. Of course, regular outdoor exercise is necessary for dogs to absorb nutrients and stay healthy.
Easy Treats
If a dog is experiencing constipation or is overweight, in addition to necessary leash exercise, you can give them some oatmeal as a treat. Oatmeal contains eight vitamins and minerals, is high in dietary fiber, and is less likely to contribute to weight gain, while also helping with constipation. If an owner is too busy to take their dog out, a little unsalted, pure peanut butter spread on a plate can keep them happily licking for a long time!
Delicious food is essential for enhancing life, both for dogs and humans. However, owners should regularly exercise their dogs on a leash and consciously develop good eating habits during leash training, ensuring they don’t overeat to prevent obesity and other health issues!
